====== Léger, Alma ====== (18 Aug. 1877-13 Jan. 1969), named Sister Marie Bernadette, member of religious community. Born at Ste-Marthe, Vaudreuil County, Que. Parents: Julien Léger and his wife Virginie Lauzon. It is said that when she was four years old, her parents moved to Alexandria. The place where she lived in GC is also said to have been Green Valley, so perhaps Alexandria was just the name of the nearest large place. When she was preparing to leave for China in 1913, the //Glengarry News// gave the address of her parents as the 8th of Lancaster (which agrees with the Green Valley description). (//Glengarry News// 20 June 1913) In 1904 she entered the community of the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception in Outremont, Que. Her first profession was made in 1909 and her perpetual profession was made on 5 April 1915, when she was in China. In July 1913 she had left for China as a sister in her community, and she remained there until 1949. She worked in the leper colony of Shek Lung from 1914 to 1916 and in Canton from 1916 to 1921 and again in Shek Lung from 1921 to 1949. In what were often primitive conditions, she worked for the ill and the poor. In Dec. 1938 the convent in which she was living was attacked and pillaged by bandits. With the victory of the Communists in China, missionaries had to leave, and in 1949 Sister Marie Bernadette left Shek Lung and returned to Canada. She died at the Hermitage Mary of the Holy Spirit, Pont-Viau (Laval), Que. A 6-page typescript life of Sister Marie Bernadette preserved by her community has a few striking recollections of her life in GC and much remarkable material on her work in China. ---- Typescript life as described [<6>]
