====== Macdonald, A. Gordon ====== (1885-13 Feb. 1948), postmaster, sportsman. (Gordon Macdonald) Born in Alexandria, GC. Parents: A. D. R. Macdonald and his wife Rachel MacMaster. He was educated at the Alexandria separate school and Alexandria High School. Before WWI, he worked with his brother Donald John (“Boots”) Mcdonald in the grocery business in Alexandria, and established a strong local reputation as an athlete, being especially proficient in lacrosse. Joining the Army Service Corps early in WWI, he served four years overseas. After the war, he was in business in Haileybury, Ont., and from 1925 or 1927 in Kirkland Lake, Ont. In 1922 he suffered serious losses in the fires then raging in the Haileybury area. (//Glengarry News// 6 Oct. 1922) At Kirkland Lake he operated a men’s wear store. He was a member of the Township of Teck Council, 1929-1931. From 1 Jan. 1939 (appointment noted, //Glengarry News// 23 Dec. 1938) till his death, he was the postmaster of Kirkland Lake. One of the prominent citizens of Kirkland Lake in his time, he was active in a wide range of community activities and a dedicated supporter of sports. An interest in lacrosse, however, he is said to have been unable to encourage among the Kirkland Lake people. He died at Kirkland District Hospital (name thus). (three children) Roman Catholic. He was married in 1921 to Ida Marie Villeneuve, who was the daughter of Frank B. Villeneuve and the sister of Osie Villeneuve.
