====== MacRae, Norman Alexander ====== (31 July 1900-19 July 1971), scientist. (Norman A. MacRae, N. A. MacRae, Norman MacRae) Born in the Dunvegan area, GC, perhaps at Stewarts Glen. Parents: Murdoch John MacRae (d. 1948) and his wife Nora (Norah) Alice MacLeod (d. 1944). Early in life, he was a schoolteacher at Dunvegan and (1925-1926) principal of Maxville Public School. Degrees: B. A. (Queen’s University, 1928), M. Sc. (McGill, 1930), Ph. D. (University of California, 1939). He was assistant in Botany and Plant Pathology at Macdonald College, 1928-1930; was tobacco specialist with the Tobacco Division, Dominion Dept. of Agriculture, 1930-1941; was on loan to the Wartime Prices and Trade Board, 1941-1946; and was chief, Tobacco Division, Experimental Farms Service, Dominion Dept. of Agriculture, Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa, from 1947. At several international scientific congresses he was a Canadian delegate. He was the author of a number of booklets and articles on tobacco cultivation, including //Tobacco Growing in Canada// (Ottawa, 1935, 1938, 45 pp.) and “Canadian Tobacco, Production and Consumption” (//Commercial Intelligence Journal//, 1946, 16 pp.), and (with a co-author) //Varietal Studies of Flue-Cured, Burley and Dark Tobaccos //(Ottawa, 1935, 61 pp.). From 1965 he was retired. (//Glengarry News// 27 May 1965) He died in an Ottawa hospital and is buried at Pinecrest Cemetery, Ottawa. At Russell, Ont., 7 July 1934, he was married to Gladys Florence Barrington (d. 20 Nov. 1980) (name also found as Florence Gladys Barrington). (one child, adopted daughter) He was a Presbyterian and a Presbyterian elder. His sister was married to Donald S. Ferguson.
