(d. 29 July 1855), fur trader. Paul Fraser was a fur trader with the North West Company from 1819 and with the HBC from 1821. He served on Lesser Slave Lake and in the Athabaska Department and in New Caledonia. In 1843 he achieved the rank of chief trader. He was the brother of Col. Alexander Fraser of Fraserfield. Little is known about Paul Fraser compared with many of the Nor’Westers. Even less is known about whatever connections he maintained with Glengarry County. However, his mother lived at St. Raphael’s till about her 90th year. And given the dates of his life and his brother Alexander’s, it is highly possible that Paul resided in Glengarry for a few years after the War of 1812. Likewise we may trust or speculate that in later years he was sometimes a guest at his brother’s hospitable Glengarry mansion. It is not surprising that we lack documentary records of Paul’s presence in GC. The GC records for his period are poor, especially compared for those from about Confederation onwards. The fact that few Glengarrians of his time had the Christian name Paul means at least that if a Paul Fraser is found in the records it was probably this Paul.
