(25 Dec. 1848-25 March 1925), lawyer. Born at South Mountain, Dundas County, Ont. Parents: Mr and Mrs William John Graham. He attended high school at Iroquois in his native county and graduated in the Faculty of Arts at McGill in 1876. During 1876-1878 he taught in the high school at Alexandria and during 1879-1880 at the high school at Williamstown. At both high schools he ranked as principal or teacher in charge, though this status did not mean what it later did. At Williamstown there was only one other teacher in his school, and the situation must have been much the same at Alexandria. At Alexandria, his students included J. Lockie Wilson and the future Dr Archibald L. Macdonald. In 1881, John Graham and his wife settled in Winnipeg, and at some date within the 1880s he was called to the bar of Manitoba. He had a long and successful career as a Winnipeg lawyer. At his death he was described as a “prominent lawyer and pioneer resident of Winnipeg.” It does not appear that he was interested in seeking political honours. He died at his home in Winnipeg. (two children) News of his death reached Alexandria by way of a telegram to Hugh Munro. John Graham had been for many years the treasurer of Knox Presbyterian Church, Winnipeg, but in later years “he attended Augustine Church,” which was also Presbyterian till it became United Church after Church Union. He was married to Florence G. Holmes of Montreal.
