Lalonde, Léopold

(1910-13 Oct. 1961), lawyer and magistrate. (Magistrate Leopold Lalonde) Born at Ste-Anne-de-Prescott, Ont.. Parents: Josephus A. Lalonde, later a general merchant in Alexandria, and his wife Anna Roy. Education: primary school, Alexandria High School, University of Ottawa, the law offices of Danis and Danis, Cornwall (see Danis), and at Osgoode Hall. Called to the bar in June 1938, he began law practice in Alexandria in Sept. of that year. (Glengarry News 3 Sept. 1938) Soon after he was found to have a TB problem and had to spend some two years in the San at Glen Walter. He was presumably the Léopold Lalonde who published a letter in the Standard-Freeholder of 24 Oct. 1941 protesting about the serving of food in dirty dishes at the San. His fight against TB proved long and hard, extending over many years. He was also at some stage a sanatorium patient at Hamilton, Ont. In 1951, he was appointed a deputy police magistrate for Ontario, and occupied the bench for the first time at L’Orignal. (GN 20 & 27 April 1951, portrait) As a magistrate, he had jurisdiction in Glengarry and Prescott and Russell counties. Magistrate Lalonde died suddenly at his home in Alexandria, aged only 51. (1 child) Roman Catholic. Member of Sacred Heart Parish. He was married on 28 April 1943 to Lucille Lalonde, daughter of Ulric Lalonde (see Hector Genereux). She died at Cobourg, Ont., 11 Feb. 2008, aged 97. Leopold Lalonde was the brother of Fr Adalbert Lalonde (12 Sept. 1906-31 May 1983), a priest of the diocese of Alexandria, and of Rev. Sister Henriette Lalonde, of the Holy Cross Sisters (d. 1 Oct. 2003, aged 91). (their obituaries, Glengarry News 8 June 1983, portrait, & 31 Dec. 2003) He was also the brother of Mrs Roméo Rouleau.
