Maclennan, Alexander Malcolm

(28 Feb. 1862-31 May 1936, but age at death 66, inconsistent with these dates, also found), miner. (Alex Maclennan, A. M. Maclennan, sp. also McLennan) Native of Lancaster, GC. Parents: Duncan Mason McLennan, and his wife, whose Christian name was Margaret. He “arrived in the Yukon in the spring of 1897. He and his brother, Archie, remained in Skagway and Whitehorse until the following year, when they went to Dawson. During the winter of 1898 the brothers mined on Dominion Creek and later Alexander McLennan went to Upper Bonanza, where he engaged in mining before taking a position with the Boyle Company, near Bear Creek. In 1900 he visited his old Ontario home and was accompanied back by his sister, Margaret. He and his family moved to Mayo, Yukon, in 1926, when he was appointed fire chief, a position he filled to the last.” A biographical sketch contributed by his daughter to the history Gold & Galena seems to indicate that his arrival in the Yukon was in 1898, one year later than the above assumes, and that he fairly early gave up the personal hunt for gold in favour of paid employment, sometimes mining related. On 21 Oct. 1914, he was married to Alice Mills, from Ireland. When he died in Mayo General Hospital, he was survived by his wife and three daughters. At the time of Alexander’s death, his brother Archie was living in “Selkirk” (presumably Fort Selkirk) in the Yukon. They were cousins of Dr D. R. (Randy) McLennan, who was postmaster at Mayo, where Alexander lived. Alexander may have been the brother of Donald Mason Maclennan.
