(died 4 Jan. 1952, in his 76th year), registrar of deeds. (Stephen O’Connor, Sr) Born at Kars, Ont. Parents: Mathieu O’Connor and his wife Mary Doyle. He attended school at Osgoode, Ont., and at Kemptville, Ont., and was a schoolteacher over many years in Kenyon and Lochiel Tps, GC. He was chosen as the Liberal candidate for GC for the Ontario general election of 30 Oct. 1929, but withdrew because of illness. (Glengarry News 11 & 18 Oct. 1929). J. A. Sangster, who replaced him as candidate, was elected. Stephen O’Connor was appointed registrar of deeds for GC in the fall of 1934. (Standard Freeholder 24 Oct. 1934, Glengarry News 2 Nov. 1934) O’Connor was at the time secretary of the Glengarry Liberal Association, and he replaced a registrar, J.A. McRae, who was a Conservative, following the victory of Mitch Hepburn’s Liberals in the Ontario provincial election of June 1934. A resident of Glen Robertson at the time of his appointment, O’Connor, moved shortly afterwards to Alexandria. (GN 16 Nov. 1934) O’Connor remained registrar till his death. He was secretary of the Alexandria Cheese Board and acted as secretary of several cheese factories, and was an insurance agent. He was married in 1909 to Salome Quenneville of Lochiel Township. He died in St. Mary’s Hospital, Montreal. (thirteen children) He was a Roman Catholic, and a member of the Sacré-Coeur parish. Alexandria. His children included a son also called Stephen O’Connor (d. 14 Oct. 1985, aged 70), who served overseas in WWII, operated a taxi business in Alexandria, and was clerk-treasurer 1966-1977 of Kenyon Township, and also operated the Alexandria auto license bureau. J.A. McRae’s son became registrar, following the death of O’Connor (GN 28 March 1952).
