Cameron, Hugh A

(28 Jan. 1855-24 Feb. 1927), farmer, soldier. (H. A. Cameron, military title commonly used, Major Cameron, Col. Cameron) Born on the family homestead, which was to be his home throughout his life, in the Martintown-MacGillivrays Bridge area, GC. Parents: Dougald Cameron and his wife Margaret McDonell. He was reeve of Charlottenburgh Township, where he was active in municipal affairs, and in 1907 he was warden of SDG. In politics, he was a Conservative. He was a dairy farmer on a large scale, operating a 250-acre farm in 1920.

     Hugh Cameron was deeply involved in the work of the militia, and he was a major in the 59th Stormont and Glengarry Regiment before WWI. Early in the war, he was active in recruiting in the Cornwall area. In April 1916, when he had already reached his 60s, he went overseas as second in command of the 59th (Glengarry News 7 April 1916), and he was advanced later to full command. After serving in France, he returned to Canada in April 1917, and when the 59th was re-organized he was retired with the rank of lt.-col. In 1921, he unveiled the WWI memorial plaque at Lancaster.      He was remembered a few years after his death, in the obituary of his sister Miss Mary Cameron of Martintown, as being “in his lifetime prominent in local military affairs and one of the best known men in Glengarry and Stormont. (Standard Freeholder 5 Nov. 1932 )

     He was an elder at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Martintown, before Church Union, and when St. Andrew’s became part of the United Church, he helped to establish the continuing Presbyterian church in Martintown. He never married. He was survived by 2 unmarried sisters. His brother Donald Archibald Cameron (1861-7 April 1911), a graduate of the University of Toronto and a lawyer, practised law at Iron Mountain, Mich., and Norway, Mich.
