Catlin, A.L.

contractor, of American firm A.L. Catlin & Co. He was the contractor on the unsuccessful attempt to build the Montreal and City of Ottawa Junction Railway through Alexandria from Ottawa south to the Grand Trunk line. In July 1872, D.A. Macdonald “completed a contract with an American firm, Messrs A.L. Catlin & Co., to build the line from Ottawa to the Grand Trunk near Coteau Landing.” (Gleaner, 1 Aug. 1872) As a result of the financial panic of 1873 work on the railroad ceased at the beginning of 1874. Later, under the leadership of J.R. Booth, the railway was built as the Canada Atlantic, with D. C. Linsley as the contractor.
