Grant, Alexander Lewis
(1873-27 Dec. 1916), contractor. (A. L. Grant, A. Lewis Grant) Parents: Mr and Mrs J. Alpin Grant, of the South Branch. He was killed in a train collision at St-Polycarpe, Que. He was described in his obituary as “a well known railroad contractor.” He was survived by his wife Janet H. Ross (1865-1947) and by one son, A. Dallas Grant (known as Dallas Grant). Dallas Grant (1900-1963) was a businessman well known in GC, at least in his later years. In 1936 it was reported that Dallas Grant, a native of Lancaster, GC, was “being prominently mentioned” as a possible candidate for the Quebec assembly. Dallas Grant, “a fluent bilingualist,” was at this time plant superintendent of the Canada Paper Co. Ltd., at Windsor Mills, Que. (Standard Freeholder 9 Dec. 1936 ) When his mother died in 1947 he was president of Sherbrooke Silk Hosiery Mills, of Sherbrooke, Que. (SFH 1947) Dallas Grant’s wife, Dorothy Stalker, who survived him, died in Cornwall General Hospital, 2 June 2002, in her 93rd year. (Glengarry News 5 June 2002)
