Guinevan, William A.

(died 20 Dec. 1954, at age given as 68 or “about 70”), clergyman. (William Guinevan, Dr Guinevan) Born in London, Eng. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1913. In England, he was a priest first in the archdiocese of Westminster and next in the diocese of Brentwood. His title of Dr has been explained both as a Ph. D. and a D. D. In WWI, he was a chaplain in the British Army, and received several decorations. He was in Alexandria, GC, as a secretary to Bishop Couturier, apparently with a two-year agreement to serve in that role. He was one of a number of people from “the old country” that Bishop Couturier, never it would appear quite at ease with North America, had with him at Alexandria .(See Bishop Field) At the funeral of John A. McDougald in St. Finnan’s in 1923, Dr Guinevan was “Master of Ceremonies.” In 1923, he revisited England, then shortly after returning to Alexandria, he left to serve in the archdiocese of Edmonton. (Cornwall Standard 2 Aug. 1923, Glengarry News 26 Oct. 1923) Thereafter, he served as a priest in Alberta (1923-1924, Montreal (1924-1925), and Alberta again (1925), then during the following decades in New Mexico and Texas. He died at St. Joseph’s Sanitorium, El Paso, Texas. He was buried at Deming, N. Mex. The El Paso obituary stated, “He is survived by a sister, Sister Margaret Guinevan of Canada.”
