Kennedy, Elma Isabel
(1905-26 Nov. 1983), author of publications on statistics. (Elma I. Kennedy, Elma Kennedy) Born at St. Elmo East, GC. Parents (who lived on Elmwood Farm, Lot 30 of the 8th Concession of Kenyon): Duncan Hugh Kennedy and his wife Christy Ann Stewart. Elma Kennedy attended Maxville High School, Queen’s University (B.A., 1926, with a major in mathematics), and the Ontario College of Education at the University of Toronto. For 11 years (1927-1938) she taught mathematics at Finch High School, where she also had responsibility for the physical education program. In 1940, she entered the federal civil service. There she worked especially in statistical analysis with the Forest Products Research Laboratory. According to her obituary (Glengarry News), “Her statistical publications were used in forestry colleges across Canada and in the United States Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, Wisconsin.” She retired from the civil service, 1968, and lived at Glebe Centre senior citizens residence, Ottawa, from 1974. She died at the Glebe Centre. Her obituary (GN) states, “Her residence in Ottawa for over 40 years was a congenial gathering place for the Kennedys of Maxville, the MacPhees of Vankleek Hill, the Campbells of Athol and many others from Glengarry.” She was unmarried. Elma Isabel Kennedy was the aunt of Bob Campbell, the well-known author and co-author of standard Glengarry genealogical publications (see abbreviations, this dictionary, for his book titles).
Elma Kennedy was the author of the following publications: Elma I. Kennedy, Span Tables for Wood Joists and Rafters for Housing (1965; pp. 56; Canada Dept. of Forestry, Forest Products Research Branch, Dept. of Forestry Publication No. 1110). An expansion and revision of a booklet of pp. 46 published in 1961 with the same title, but with no author stated, by Canada Dept. of Forestry, Forest Products Research Branch, as Technical Note No. 30. Published also in French as Elma I. Kennedy, Tables des portées maximales des solives et des chevrons de bois utilisés dans la construction des maisons (1969; pp. 53; Ministère des pêches et forêts, Direction générale des forêts, Publication no 1110F du Ministère).
