Lanthier, Georges

(5 Sept. 1906-27 Feb. 1983), bakery proprietor. Born in L’Orignal, Ont. Parents: Joseph Lanthier and his wife H. Lalonde. In Sept. 1932 he came to Alexandria from L’Orignal to take possession of a small bakery. Thenceforth, he was a businessman in Alexandria, where he and his wife built up a bakery business which became one of the most important economic enterprises of the GC area. Beginning with two employees, the company as it grew had as many as 168 on one occasion. Its bread products were sold widely throughout the easternmost part of Ontario and in the westernmost part of Quebec, with a market extending into Montreal. The name of the company in 1932 was the Alexandria Bakery. In 1956 the name was changed to La Boulangerie Geo. Lanthier et Fils Ltée. There were major expansions of the Alexandria plant about 1940 and 1950, and in 1962. In 1973 the company bought the Dalkeith Bakery from Denis Ethier, MP. (Glengarry News 12 April 1973; see Ethier names this dictionary) Georges Lanthier was married at L’Orignal in 1931 to Adrienne Cadieux, who was born at L’Orignal. (children surviving him: 8) He died at Hotel Dieu Hospital, Cornwall, after a period of failing health. Roman Catholic. Bilingual. Mrs Lanthier died at Glengarry Memorial Hospital, Alexandria, on 1 Aug. 1996.
