MacCallum, William Bailie
(10 Aug. 1863-2 Nov. 1938), clergyman. (W. B. MacCallum, William B. MacCallum) (birth 16 Aug. also found) Born at Durham, Pictou Co. , N. S. He graduated from Auburn Theological Seminary, of Auburn, N. Y., in 1897. Before coming to GC, he was a Presbyterian minister in the United States and Quebec. He was inducted 29 Jan. 1926 as minister of the Presbyterian Congregation of the Gordon Church, St. Elmo, succeeding the Rev. G. Watt Smith, who had resigned at the time of the Church Union controversy when the Gordon Church congregation voted to remain in the Presbyterian Church rather than join the United Church. “A man of wide interests, gifted musically, generous to the poor in depression years, fond of a fast horse, witty and ever ready for a argument, especially in politics, he was known to a host of friends as a ‘character’.” (MacMillan) A member of the Orange lodge at Dunvegan, MacCallum was honoured after his death as having been a member of the Orange Order for 36 years. (Glengarry News 17 Feb. 1939) Just his being a member was remarkable; not many GC ministers over the years ever belonged. To set the context, it can be mentioned that the mild GC Orange Order was hardly a dynamic anti-papal organization. While at St. Elmo MacCallum wrote occasional letters to the press on topics including crime, temperance (mainly), and separate schools. The Rev. W. B. MacCallum remained minister of the Gordon Church till his death, which took place in the manse at St. Elmo, 13 years to the day from the date on the document by which the congregation called him. He was married at Springhill, N. S., in Jan. 1903 to Christie Anna Fraser (1869-1956). (five children surviving him) He and his wife are buried in the St. Elmo cemetery.
