Macleod, Donald Morrison

(17 Jan. 1870-11 Feb. 1942), clergyman. (D. M. Macleod, Donald M. Macleod) Born at Springton, P. E. I. Parents: John K. Macleod and his wife Effie McKenzie. He attended McGill University and the Presbyterian Theological College, Montreal, and was ordained to the Presbyterian ministry in 1900. His pastoral charges included Blakeney and Lyn (both in Ont.), Moose Creek (1920-1924: his first GC-area charge) and Alexandria for the last 18 years of his life. He was inducted as minister at Alexandria on 20 Nov. 1924, and remained in active service up to his death. At Church Union, he and the Alexandria church followed the United Church. He died at the Manse in Alexandria after a few days’ illness. He was married, (1) in 1909 to Elizabeth Irving (d. 1910) (one child), and (2) on 8 Oct. 1918 in Athens, Ont., to Olive Mary Usher (12 April 1888-22 April 1972) (four children) By his second marriage, he was the father of Gordon Keith Macleod. The Rev. Donald M. Macleod received the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity from the United Theological College, Montreal, in 1937. He was a Mason, and was a past master of the Alexandria lodge. When he was chosen to be the new minister at Alexandria, he was said to be a man noted “for his success in securing harmony in difficult situations.” (Cornwall Standard 18 Sept. 1924)

     The Rev. Donald M. Macleod was one of three brothers in his family to become Presbyterian ministers; one of these, the Rev. J. B. Macleod (d. 1931), was a minister at Martintown 1906-1913 and was the father of Robert Brodie Macleod.
