McCuaig, Archibald H.
(died 2 May 1908, aged 30?), man who disappeared. (Archie H. McCuaig) Archie H. McCuaig lived at Peveril, Que. On Saturday 2 May 1908 he drove from his home to Ste-Justine Station, where he left his horse in a hotel yard and took the train to Alexandria. In Alexandria, he transacted several pieces of business, which included a visit to Dr J. A. Garland the dentist. McCuaig was last seen (so far as is known) crossing Main Street in Alexandria about 5 P.M. Thereafter, he disappears from GC and the world. His family and friends made careful searches in Alexandria and area, and along the train track between Alexandria and Ste-Justine (in case he might have fallen from the train on his way home), and enquiries were made in Ottawa and Montreal–but all in vain; and the mystery of his disappearance, which fascinated the Alexandria historian Clarence Ostrom, has never been solved. When suspicions grew that his body had been dropped in the town stand pipe, the stand pipe was drained and examined but no corpse was found. It was also thought that he might have sunk into the ooze of the Mill Pond, but if so no remains have turned up over the years Another speculation–if recollection of old stories is not flawed–was that the body was burned in the furnace of one of the hotels.
