McDonell, Donald

(died 24 Nov. 1927, aged 99 years, two months), witness to historical continuity. (Capt. Donald McDonell) Born on Lot 31, 8th Concession of Charlottenburgh. His father was Capt. Alexander McDonell. This was perhaps the same man as Capt. Alexander McDonell, known also as Captain Gray or Captain Grey, who has his own separate entry in the present dictionary, or was perhaps the other man of that name in the Capt. Gray entry. The Glengarry News obituary of Donald McDonell, the subject of the present entry, stated, “He came of a military family receiving his commission of Captain in 1866, thus following in the footsteps of his father, Capt. Alex. McDonell who served in the Rebellion of 1837 and that of his grandfather who served through the American Revolution and was given a grant of land for such services which included the property which had been handed down from that date. We might add that the great-grandfather of the deceased, John Allan McDonell at Culloden had the honour of carrying the McDonells’ banner.” The Loyalist grandfather mentioned here was probably Alexander McDonell, a non-commissioned officer in the Queen’s Rangers. Donald McDonell, the subject of the present entry, died on the lot where he was born. He was a Roman Catholic, and he is buried at St. Raphael’s, five children surviving him.
