McIntosh, Donald J.
(died 9 June 1933, aged 87 or 88), physician. (Dr Dan J. McIntosh, “Dr Dan”) Born presumably on his parents’ farm, which was on Lot 23, 9th Concession of Lochiel Township. Parents: James McIntosh, a native of Perthshire, Scotland, and his wife Beatrice Fraser. Dan J. McIntosh graduated in medicine from McGill University in 1870. He began his medical practice at Vankleek Hill in the same year, and continued his practice actively there till 1924. Cyrus Thomas reported (1896) that “A little more than a year ago, he opened a neat drug store beside his residence on Main street.” His brother James McIntosh was also a physician in practice at Vankleek Hill. Dr Dan J. McIntosh died at his home in Vankleek Hill. (at least eleven children, nine surviving him) He had been married twice, (1) to a Miss Cameron of L’Orignal, and (2) to a Miss Keogh of Vankleek Hill. The children surviving him included Dr Donald of Blind River, Ont., who was a dentist, and Dr William of Toronto, and he had been predeceased by his sons Dr Fred who was a dentist at Vankleek Hill, and Dr James Alexander of Chippewa, Ont. Dr Dan J. McIntosh was called in his obituary “the village’s grand old man.” (Standard Freeholder) Originally a Presbyterian, he appears to have become in his early days at Vankleek Hill a member of the Plymouth Brethren. He and his brother James were active in the work of the Vankleek Hill town council. A booklet called Receipts of a Country Doctor 1866 issued by the Glengarry Pioneer Museum, Dunvegan, in 1987, draws on materials held by the museum and formerly owned by a Dr McIntosh of Vankleek Hill, probably this man or James.
