McLellan, Angus

(died 6 Nov. 1899, aged 67), contractor and carriage builder. He was almost certainly the brother of Donald McLellan (see that entry for biog. details). His obituary states “During the earlier part of his life the subject of this sketch was engaged in railroad contracting and carriage building, having for several years managed a large carriage shop in Woodville, Victoria County. About twenty years ago he purchased the farm upon which he died.” At the time of his death, McLellan was a resident of the South Branch. He is listed in a directory 1865-1866 as a blacksmith at Woodville, but he does not appear in the corresponding directories of 1858 and 1869-1870 for that area. Carriage making and blacksmithing were closely connected, with the same man often following both at the same time, so there is nothing surprising in his being called a blacksmith while at Woodville. He was married in 1883 to Mary Grant. He was a Roman Catholic. Burial was in St. Mary’s cemetery, Williamstown.
