McRae, Murdoch

(9 Dec. 1855-22 Feb. 1945), merchant. (Murdie McRae) Born on Lot 30, in 7th Concession of Kenyon Township, GC. Parents: Donald McRae and his wife Mary McRae, who had by birth the same surname as her husband. “In his earlier years Mr. McRae rafted timber on the Ottawa River with his father,” and also worked in 1881 on the building of the Canada Atlantic Railway. For almost four decades, from 1883 to 1920, he operated a general store at Greenfield, GC, and during part of that time he also operated a sawmill and was a general contractor. He was the contractor who in 1901-1902 built the new manse at Dunvegan. He was reeve of Kenyon Township from 1907 to 1910, and was warden of SDG in 1910. From 1911 to 1936 he was treasurer of Kenyon Township. Later, his son John A. (d. 1977), besides being a farmer, was treasurer (clerk-treasurer ) of the same township for an even longer period, 29 years. In addition to the duties already mentioned, Murdoch McRae was secretary treasurer for over 20 years of Greenfield Public School, “and died in harness so far as that position is concerned.” He died at his home at Greenfield. (twelve children, six surviving him) Burial was at the Dunvegan Cemetery. He was married to Mary McDonald (d. 11 Dec. 1937).
