Hope, George James Karl

(4 May 1917-4 Nov. 1984), horseman. (George Hope, George J. Hope) Born in Hamilton, Ont. Parents: Angus Hope and his wife Margaret Vogan. George Hope, who lived in the Glen Robertson area most of his life, ran the Hope family farm there, also conducted a garage and service station, and was a drover. He was a dedicated horseman, working hard over many years at the techniques of breeding, selection and harnessing, and at the skills of competition showmanship. He was noted far beyond the GC area for his Percherons, which he often exhibited at fairs including the Maxville Fair, the Ottawa “Ex,” and the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, and which were shown also by invitation at provincial plowing matches. For his horses, he won various honours. George Hope died at Glengarry Memorial Hospital. He was married to Viola MacDonald. He was a member of the Glengarry Sports Hall of Fame. His 78-year old mother, an arthritis victim, died 25 Nov. 1974 in a Montreal hospital, a month after being brutally beaten, in an event which shocked the community, by a young robber in her home on Main Street, Alexandria, at Halloween. George Hope of the present entry was the nephew of another George Hope, also a longtime resident of the Glen Robertson area, who died in 1975 (obit. Glengarry News 19 June 1975).
