Macdonell, Donald

(died 18 Jan. 1909, aged 77), gaoler. (spelling gaoler not jailer is usual for this man) Born on the South Branch, Charlottenburgh Township, GC. Parents: Angus Roy McDonell (1801?-1885), and (assuming Angus Roy was not married more than once) his wife Ann McDonald. A deputy sheriff of SDG until 1872, when he succeeded his brother James as gaoler of SDG, in charge of the counties’ prison at Cornwall, Donald held the position of gaoler for 33 years, until 1904. He died in Cornwall. The burial was at St. Columban’s cemetery, Cornwall. Married. (two children surviving him) At the time of his death he had a brother and sister living at Glenbrook, GC, perhaps the neighbourhood from which he came. He was the brother-in-law of Archibald J. McDonell, who was a senator in the Nevada legislature. Donald Macdonell must be distinguished from his contemporary and near namesake, Donald Aeneas Macdonell, who was also of Cornwall and was warden of the Kingston Penitentiary.
